How Caregivers Are Protecting Home Care Clients During Coronavirus

How Caregivers Are Protecting Home Care Clients During Coronavirus, Cherished CompanionsAs our nation struggles with the Coronavirus, we are keenly aware of the vulnerability of our caregiving clients and caregivers. Cherished Companions cares about our community, particularly the older and medically fragile. To fight COVID-19, we’re taking precautions and calling on our superheroes, caregivers, to help us keep everyone safe.

We’re Taking COVID-19 Seriously

Coronavirus is a serious issue, and we’re treating it as such. Our caregivers are receiving regular updates on what to expect, how to prevent the spread, and how to serve clients best during this pandemic.

We’re following the guidelines created by the federal government for 30 Days to Slow the Spread. State mandates, like the Ohio Stay At Home Order, are also influencing our policies and practices.

Our jobs are considered essential since our clients depend on their caregivers to meet vital needs. We recognize the risks and responsibilities involved in home care during a pandemic, and we count Cherished caregivers as heroes! They are taking precautions, preventing the spread, and sacrificing to keep clients safe and healthy.

Precautionary Steps

As our caregivers enter clients homes and are often in contact with vulnerable people, we are asking them to take four precautionary steps.

  1. Our caregivers are taking their temperature before each shift. Caregivers in need of a thermometer will be provided one for free. If a caregiver has an elevated temperature, even if they have no other symptoms, they are required to stay home. Any other symptoms of illness need to be reported immediately.
  2. When caregivers are not on a shift, we are asking them to self-isolate as much as possible. This prevents them from contracting an illness on personal time and bringing it into the homes of clients accidentally.
  3. Every caregiver has hand washing instructions, including the requirement that they wash their hands for 30 seconds when starting a shift, throughout their work, and when they finish.
  4. We are asking our caregivers to wear masks when they are in close contact with their clients. We are also encouraging them to wear gloves during visits.

While we take these precautions, we are also adjusting our hiring process to practice social distancing. Caregivers are in demand currently, so hiring must continue, but our intakes and orientations will be carried out differently to be able to provide safe distancing in order to protect our clients.

Staying Up to Date on Best Practices

How Caregivers Are Protecting Home Care Clients During Coronavirus, Cherished CompanionsOne of our top priorities is keeping caregivers informed. We are communicating quickly about new best practices and other information about preventing the spread of COVID-19. On top of vigilant communication, we’re also keeping up to date with the best practices recommended by the Home Care Association of America

What To Do If You Think Someone Has Symptoms

If you think you or a loved one may have been exposed to Coronavirus, self-isolation is essential. Those who are dependent on the care of others, like individuals who are bedridden, should warn caregivers of any exposure or symptoms so they can wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

For those who begin to show symptoms of COVID-19, including an elevated temperature, cough, or shortness of breath, it’s important to take action. Follow the CDC guidelines, which you can find here. There’s also a self-checker on this webpage to help you determine your level of concern.
